Kitchen plans

Today I’m going to introduce you to my kitchen. We haven't really done much to it in the 5 years we have live here except paint it and hang new lights above the Island. Do you ever kind of dislike things about a room you see everyday, but then look at the actual pictures you have taken of that room and then realize how you REALLY dislike them?! Ugh. I’m having that moment right now.  (Excuse the pictures. I snapped them really quick and didn't bother styling or anything! )

Don’t get me wrong…I do love my kitchen. The cabinets are great, the size and the layout is perfect, and I cant complain about the solid surface countertops, but there are a few little updates that have been on our wish list that I’m hoping to scratch off this summer. We’ve always wanted to install a backsplash and that is actually happening right now! (squeel!) but as soon as we change one thing, my mind starts thinking of all the other things we I want to update!

First on the list is paint. I’m so over the green. I was kind of over it when it was first painted. It turned out much greener than I anticipated, so now I want to brighten it up in here with light gray walls. And the table and chairs need a makeover. I don't know what I was thinking when I bought the black bistro set. My first born was only 10 months old and still in a highchair, but 5 years and 2 boys later, this table is not looking so hot anymore. It’s scratched & dented and the paint is peeling, but with black you see every speck of dust, every crumb & every finger print. We are not in the market for a new set until they are out of the ‘I love to bang my utensils on the table top’ phase, so  a fresh coat of white & gray paint is in order.

And the light fixture above the table…ugh. I never liked it much before, but now that I’m seeing it in a picture makes me loathe it even more! SO that's on my list too. As well as maybe some different bar stools and a new chair for the desk. And the desk. I need to organize the desk. I always seem to have a jumble of papers on top of it and need to come up with a better organizing solution. It drives my husband crazy! Its definitely turned into our everyday dump zone. Does anyone else have this problem?! I’m in desperate need of some good paper organizing tips.

I need a new rug too. I might even get one for under the table. I’ve been holding off until the kids grow out of their ‘I like to spill milk and drop all my food on the floor everyday’ stage.

I don't mind the roman blinds and they might stay a bit longer, but I may add a boxed window valence or cornice above the sink. We’ll see. After my roman blind dilemma from Carson's room, I kind of swore I would never make them again, so I might just have to wait until the pain from that experience wares off before I attempt making any more blinds!

So now that  have all these kitchen update ideas in my head, I thought it would be fun to put together a little mood board of what’s inspiring me right now.

It’s not really in my budget to actually buy all these wonderful things right now, but you can get a sense of what kind of feel I'd like this space to have. Think classic/contemporary Scandinavian coffee house with an industrial vibe. I’m going to search the flea markets this summer and maybe try to DIY a couple of things, but in the meantime, these are the things on my wish list:

1. A fun Scandinavian Inspired graphic rug like this one from Capel Rugs designed by Genevieve Gorder

2. A simple sculptural chandelier with a rustic twist like this one from Gabby Lighting

3. The tile I chose is a 2” x 8” travertine from the tile shop. With variations of gray and subtle hints of brown, it goes well with our existing countertops and flooring. Claros Silver from the Tile Shop

4. A cafe chair. I’m crushing on cafe chairs right now and this one from Serena & Lilly is simply stunning.

5. Metal stools like these ones from Pottery Barn give off a bit of an industrial vibe and compliment all the stainless steel in the kitchen.

I' love fresh herbs and always wanted to grow some indoors to have year round, so I’d also love to add a table by the back door for some potted plants like this industrial one from SF Girl By Bay

Gorgeous, right?!  And the tulip table and bentwood chairs? Yes please!

So that's where my kitchen stands so far. I will show you next week how my backsplash turned out and keep you updated with any  changes I make along the way.

Have a great weekend!!
